John Allen maintained an active civil law practice for 14 years prior to his appointment to the Bench in 1984.  As a Municipal and Superior Court judge for 20 years, he resolved thousands of cases in a number of areas, including construction, real estate, personal injury, employment, toxic tort, insurance and products liability.  He has training and expertise in both court and jury trials as well dispute resolution in areas of mediation and arbitration.  Applying this expertise, he has returned to private practice to represent clients.  He is a skilled negotiator, liaison, advisor and trial attorney.

Born and raised in this area, John has seen Contra Costa County from many perspectives.  He has watched it grow and has been involved in the community as a lawyer prior to becoming a judge.

As a retired judge, John has the advantage of knowing how judges are trained, how they think, and how they want cases presented to them.  As a member of the California Judges Association, he has access to the latest issues confronting judges which could possibly affect your case.

John Allen also has the advantage of knowing the law in an area better than the average litigation attorney, because he may have heard 20 cases on a subject where a litigation attorney may have only handled one.
